Editor:
We want to thank local Republicans for drawing attention to our “Thank a
Republican the next time you fill up” sign and for pointing out the location
of our new campaign headquarters.
Unfortunately, Republicans just don’t get it. It is not dependence on
foreign oil that America needs to correct; it is dependence on all fossil
fuels, including oil, that we need to change. Jerry Brooks wrote, “The truth
is that the Republicans are tryng to keep the oil supply readily available.”
That is the problem. By insisting on that “truth,” Republicans are willing
to send our brave sons and daughters to die in Middle Eastern deserts for
oil. Even McCain recently admitted that is why we are in Iraq and that he is
willing to stay for another 50 to 100 years. It is too bad Republicans are
willing to befoul our earth to hang on to a destructive energy supply.
It is amazing that Republicans have been aware of an educational movement
that, for the past third of a century, has taught young Americans about the
need to protect our earth and conserve our resources. Republicans fail to
realize that Earth Day is a symbol of the changes necessary for tomorrow.
Earth Day has survived to become a national proclamation of change and
innovative solutions to replace all fossil fuels.
By hanging on to the past, Republicans proclaim the truth of our banner. By
refusing to change, Republicans have ensured rising fuel prices, national
inflation, a declining dollar and a terrible drop of American prestige
abroad. The only response to Republican stubbornness is to say, “It is never
too late to become a Democrat.” Come by, and let’s talk about it.

Four Great Candidates for CD1
The most important part of the Arizona State
Democratic Party Meeting in Prescott was on Friday August 10, when all
the CD1 County Chairs and LD Chairs got to interview the four Democratic
primary candidates for CD1. We me with Mary Kim Titla, Ann Kirkpatrick,
Howard Shanker, and Steve Owens. Steve has not yet announced but agreed to
answer our questions nonetheless.
Here is a quick summary of their differences:
Mary Kim Titla: Emphasizes children, poverty,
education, and diversity. Her experience is in communications, public
speaking, and Native American youth. She is socially conservative and
economically and politically liberal. She is a political activist who is
just now getting a campaign organization and fund raising committee going.
She comes across as a well-educated, forceful personality willing to defend
her ideals.
Ann Kirkpatrick; Emphasized party unity, party
activism, and identification with Democratic ideals. She is an experienced
legislator and political activist. She has a well formed political
organization and the means to attract serious political donations. Ann
probably best express traditional Democratic philosophy and ideals. Her
quiet, feminine nature does not prevent her from forcefully expressing
herself and her desire to fight for her ideals.
Howard Shanker: Howard is an young, energetic
attorney with good inroads to the CD1 tribes, having defended their
interests in several land exchange cases. His success for the tribes led
him to the point of deciding to run for congress. He expresses a
traditional Democratic philosophy and is outspoken on many issues. Howard
best expresses his idea with humor and honesty.
Steve Owens: Steve is the Director of the
Arizona Department of Environmental Quality and is a solid hand at
expressing Democratic ideals. He is well traveled within CD1 and knows all
the local city and county officials. His demeanor is that of a competent,
well spoken organizer. His skills at political organization and fund
raising are well known.
Three of the four are attorneys and will use
their knowledge of Ellen Simon's experience to good ends. We have for great
candidates and this will be a dynamic campaign.
Phil Lopes, Minority Leader of the Arizona House of Representatives, talked
about the potential for the resignations of Rick Renzi, Bill Konopnicki, and
Jack Brown. HIs message was, "We will be ready." He also talked
about Randy Poulen, Chairman of the Arizona State Republican Chairman, the,
"gift that keeps on giving." Randy Poulen became the butt of many
jokes, especially when the Democratic Party Treasurer pointed out that in
our lowest funding period of the year we out ranked the Republicans 3 to 1.
