It is wonderful to have three strong candidates competing in the primary for
CD1. The Graham County Democratic Party pledges to help each of them get
exposure and funding. We wish all of them the best of luck.
Three
strong Democrats are
currently in the race to replace Rick Renzi.
Former state House member Ann Kirkpatrick, filed an exploratory committee early
on. Other Democratic candidates are
attorney Howard Shankar, and former TV newscaster
Mary Kim Titla.

Howard Shanker, Flagstaff

Note: Howard Shanker
filed with the FEC as a
federal candidate, indicating that he is a
candidate for U.S. Congress in Arizona CD#1.
The 1st District needs a Congressman who has the interests of
the people at heart. Howard Shanker has a proven track record of fighting for
the rights of all Arizonans. As co-founders of the Shanker Law Firm, Howard and
his wife Tamera have been advocates for Arizona's veterans, children, Native
Americans and the environment.

Howard's priorities are clear:
“Development and growth must be sustainable,
economically viable, environmentally responsible, and good for all Arizonans.”
“Arizona should be the solar energy capital of the
world. We should be working to develop renewable energy sources to end our
reliance on foreign oil, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and promote economic
growth in the District.”
“The character of our involvement in Iraq must change.
We need to develop a responsible exit-plan that will bring our troops home
safely. We must replace our current military posture with an international
effort to rebuild their war torn country. We need to negotiate a political
solution to the current morass.”
“It is essential that our veterans are treated with
dignity and respect, and provided with comprehensive healthcare and social
services.”
“Governmental fraud, waste, and abuse have become
commonplace. It is time to elect responsible lawmakers. The wholesale
privatization of essential governmental functions must stop.”

Good news for Arizona and CD1.
After much soul searching and prayer and after being encouraged
by voters, I am humbled and honored to inform you I have decided to run for
Congress for Arizona's First Congressional District as a Democratic candidate.
Believing I am the change needed in Arizona's First Congressional District, I am
ready to be a real voice for the people and although I am a conservative
Democrat, I intend to reach out and better serve all citizens of District 1 no
matter what party they belong to. I want to hear from the people.

Real dedication and experience...
On July 24, 2007 Ann Kirkpatrick resigned her seat in the Arizona State House of
Representatives (D2) to run for the U.S. Congress in CD1.
“I am excited to bring Arizona's tradition of success to
Washington. We need to restore integrity and dedicated representation to the
people of the First District,” Kirkpatrick said in a written statement.
She indirectly cited Renzi’s recent legal troubles as the
reason for her candidacy. Renzi, a three-term representative, is under
investigation for sponsoring legislation that would have benefited his former
business partner. Renzi's term expires in 2008; he has not yet announced if he
will seek reelection.
